POLICE hold grave fears for the wellbeing of a 30-year-old man who vanished from an Alpha-based work camp on Saturday night.

Longreach and Alpha police were seeking public assistance to locate Edward Hawkins, last seen at the workers' camp on Port Wine Rd, Alpha, on Saturday night.

Mr Hawkins is described as being Caucasian in appearance, about 170cm tall with a slim build, brown short hair and blue eyes.

"Police haven't activated a full search yet but we have all been keeping an eye out," Longreach officer-in-charge Snr Sgt Graham Seabrook said.

"Detectives have been making local enquiries and will continue to do so.

"We believe he was last seen by people he worked with.

"He provided a Longreach address to his employers but he is not known to us as a local, we believe he may have stayed in Longreach for a short period of time."

Snr Sgt Seabrook confirmed Mr Hawkins' vehicle was found in Longreach.

Police believe the man may be on foot somewhere between Alpha and Winton, hitchhiking on the Capricorn or Landsborough highways.
