HE received a hero's reception, but former Manchester United star Cristiano Ronaldo broke fans' hearts when he scored to give Real Madrid a 2-1 victory this morning and send the Red Devils crashing out of the Champions League.

Ronaldo was almost apologetic after knocking in a cross in the 69th minute, not long after Luka Modric had equalised.

The defeat was United's first in a Champions League knockout game at Old Trafford since February 2005 - a 1-0 loss to AC Milan - and manager Sir Alex Ferguson blamed it in part on the sending off of Nani 10 minutes into the second half when the home side led 1-0.
