Motocross star's fall from grace

FROM sliding across tracks to sliding into drug addiction, a rising motocross star has narrowly avoided sliding into jail.

Ipswich man Shaun Redhead, 21, was perched on the edge of motocross stardom but turned to dealing marijuana and methylamphetamine.

As a teen Redhead netted state and national titles on his 250cc four-stroke Yamaha, but in more recent years has struggled to hold a licence to drive on the road, with it revoked for lengthy periods.

He pleaded guilty in Brisbane Supreme Court on Wednesday to an array of drug-related charges, including selling drugs to his friends.

Police searched Redhead's home in late 2014 and found drugs, marijuana seeds and implements.

They also found a mobile phone that indicated he had been selling drugs for about 12 months.

Redhead estimated to police he made about $30,000 of sales in that time with street level dealing, selling a few hundred dollars worth each week.

He also pleaded guilty to breaking into a property at the end of 2014 where police found his fingerprints and footprints.

But Redhead told Justice Ann Lyons: "I'm changed, and I'm trying to change my life".

Redhead's defence counsel told the court his client had good intellectual capacity and strong motivation and had embraced support from family and friends in the racing community since being charged.

He said Redhead had undergone several months of a drug rehabilitation program, was living with his mother and working for a pest control service and had taken several urine tests to demonstrate he was now drug-free.

The lawyer said Redhead had been drug-free for two years.

The court heard Redhead had been offered full-time employment in the motorcycle industry by a person who himself had been offered a second chance of a job to turn his life around.

Justice Lyons did not send Redhead into custody but gave him a four-year suspended jail term.

He must complete four years of probation.
