Sign our CQ NRL bid petition

SUPPORT for the CQ NRL bid is gathering momentum among some of the game’s current stars.

Among the high-profile players who have joined the call for an NRL licence for a Rockhampton-based team are Broncos Nick Kenny, Dave Taylor and Ben Hunt; Neville Costigan of the Dragons; and South Sydney’s Jamie Simpson.

These players have signed The Morning Bulletin’s petition – part of a campaign which aims to get 50,000 signatures of support for a CQ NRL franchise.

You too can get involved and it’s as easy as downloading the Morning Bulletin's CQ NRL bid petition.

Once you print it out, get your friends, family and workmates to sign and help our NRL dream become reality.

“This petition is Central Queensland’s chance to say to the NRL – where’s our team?” said Morning Bulletin chief of staff and petition organiser Darryn Nufer.

The current players who have signed the petition are clients of former Rockhampton man Matthew Pearson, a Brisbane-based accountant who manages the financial affairs of a number of rugby league personalities.

Matthew, an enthusiastic supporter of the bid, said the petition had been on the counter of his company, Life Arena, for just a few days but it was attracting lots of attention in the state capital.

“Everyone from Central Queensland has to be excited about this bid,” he said.

“The players who have signed so far realise how great it would be for the game to have an NRL club based in Rocky.”

He said he hoped to get a lot more signatures from players who have real clout in the sport, including Broncos big-hitting forward Sam Thaiday and David Stagg of the Bulldogs.

“Sam’s from the far north, but I’m sure he’ll come on board,” said Matthew, who left Rockhampton after school in 1996.

“We will be sending the petition forms back to The Morning Bulletin with some signatures from people who will make people sit up and take notice,” he said.

The CQ NRL bid team is led by chairman Geoff Murphy, a successful Central Queensland businessman who is managing director of the JM Kelly group of companies.
