1000 workers could go as Optus looks to cut $200m in costs

ABOUT 1000 jobs could disappear from Optus as the telco considers dramatic action to free up funds to ensure it can afford sports media rights.

Confidential documents released to The Australian suggest 1011 staff could go under its cost-cutting plan which would run from April 1 until March 31 2017.

Hundreds of staff would be expected to go in the Optus network division, corporate support roles and retail workers from its Virgin Mobile subsidiary, the Australian reports.

The cuts would equate to about a 10% reduction in staff from its 9235 total at the end of 2015.

Optus has told the ABC that it was always reviewing its staff numbers and operations but had no plans to make 1000 roles redundant.

"As our business evolves we anticipate we will need to make further changes to the way we organise ourselves to help support our business goals, but we have no specific changes to share right now," she said in a statement.
