13,000 tyres burn sending up toxic clouds in Melbourne

MORE than 13,000 tyres are burning in a massive industrial blaze in Melbourne with firefighters calling in aerial water bombers to fight the toxic inferno.

The blaze, in a pile of tyres measuring about 100 metres by 30 metres, has sent a plume of thick, black, toxic smoke billowing into the air, the ABC reported.

The smoke has been seen from as far away as Dromana, on the Mornington Peninsula.

The fire broke out on Maygar Boulevard, in Melbourne's north west, just before 9:00am.

Deputy chief officer David Youssef from the MFB said up to 130,000 tyres, about half of the pile, were burning.

The Metropolitan Fire Brigade issued an alert for Broadmeadows, Campbellfield, Coolaroo, Dallas, Fawkner, Gladstone Park, Glenroy, Gowanbrae, Hadfield, Jacana, Lalor, Meadow Heights, Reservoir, Thomastown, Westmeadows.

"Emergency services are attending to a  toxic smoke  in the area of Maygar Street BROADMEADOWS,'' it said.

"Maygar Boulevard and Park Street partially closed and people are advised to avoid the area.

"Anyone located in the area should shelter indoors ensuring all exterior doors, windows and vents are turned closed and that heating and cooling systems are turned off.

"Northerly winds of up to 15 kms per hour are expected throughout the day, a southerly change is expected between 14:00 and 15:00 hours, there is also a chance of rain.

"Emergency services are monitoring the smoke from the fire.

"Toxic smoke is being released and are travelling towards Hume Highway."
