16 arrested in Townsville, Magnetic Island drug busts

OFFICERS from the Townsville Drug Squad have closed a major drug trafficking ring in a 13 month operation, arresting sixteen offenders.

Numerous premises on Magnetic Island as well as in suburbs in Townsville were searched during the latest phase of Operation North Shellstar.

Sixteen people were arrested on 56 charges, including two people charged with drug trafficking.

Property and cash valued in excess of $200,000 was seized in the raids, and is believed to be the proceeds of crime.

Operation North Shellstar involved officers from across the Townsville Police District, Drug Detection Dog unit and partner agencies.

Detective Senior Sergeant Mick Walker said Operation North Shellstar has successfully dismantled an organised drug trafficking syndicate that will have a significant impact of the supply of dangerous drugs.

"These drugs were destined for the party scenes within the Townsville area and it is anticipated that the short term supply of these types of drugs has been significantly disrupted as a result of police action," Detective Senior Sergeant Walker said.

A 43-year-old Kirwin man and a 31-year-old North Ward man have both been charged with drug trafficking and numerous other drug charges.

Both are due to appear in the Townsville Magistrates Court on February 12.

Investigations are ongoing.
