160kg turtle hit by boat, taken into care

QUOIN Island Turtle Rehabilitation Service is caring for its largest turtle yet, a green sea turtle that weighs in at 160kg.

Rose came into their care yesterday after she was beached at Yeppoon.

She has four grazes on her side, which carers believe are from being hit by a boat.

It's a huge task for the not-for-profit group, with their average turtle size being 10 - 15kg.

Volunteer Allison Klaiber said the turtle needs to eat 8kg of food each day, and is taking "several times more" medication than any other turtle they have had in their care.

Rose had to be lifted by a front end loader to get her off the beach at Yeppoon.

And she's home, hopefully not for too long! Weighing in at a whopping 160kg she is one of the biggest green sea turtles we have had in care. She's really weak and stressed with some old boat strike wounds. We will get her cleaned up and back into shape in no time!! Thanks to everyone who has helped and shared their support!

"Logistically, it's very hard because we can't monitor her weight very easily because it's such a big job to put her on the scales.

"She's also going to put pressure on our food and medication supplies.

"It's much more work but we've made sure that we have everything organised to take care of her."

The rehabilitation service has had up to 15 turtles at once.

Currently they have three.

Ms Klaiber said already she's noticed Rose has improved in her health.

She's now able to hold her head up, and she said she seems "perkier".
