A 20-year-old South Mackay man will face court over an alleged assault on Victoria St at the weekend.

POLICE have charged a 20-year-old man in relation to an alleged assault on Victoria St.

The incident occurred at 3.30am on Saturday, March 18, when a 19-year-old-man was allegedly assaulted from behind while talking at a taxi rank, Senior Constable Steve Smith said.

Police also allege that, as a result of the impact, the victim fell unconscious to the ground and was further assaulted while lying on the ground.

Queensland Ambulance Service was called to the scene and transported the 19-year-old man to Mackay Base Hospital for treatment.

The 20-year-old man was arrested and charged with assault occasioning bodily harm. He will appear in Mackay Magistrates Court on April 11.
