2015 Mini John Cooper Works edition from $47,400
PACKED with power and frothing at the mouth, the angriest Mini available will start from below $50,000.
The John Cooper Works versions of the third generation Mini hatch retail for $47,400 plus on-roads partnered with a manual transmission, or $49,950 with a six-speed automatic.
Powered by the most potent engine ever dropped into a Mini, the turbocharged four-cylinder generates maximum power of 170kW and 320Nm of torque, the fun hatch can sling from standstill to 100kmh in just above six seconds. Yet key improvements come in the mid-range, able to lift from 80-120kmh in 5.6 seconds - an improvement of 10% over the previous model.
There are various driving modes, including "sport", "mid" and "green" which alters acceleration response, steering feel and engine acoustics.
Dynamic Damper Control suspension is also standard, and enables drivers to specify desired driving characteristics to adapt the ride and vehicle response.
Standard equipment includes 18-inch alloys, reversing camera with parking sensors front and rear, sat nav with 22.3cm colour screen, digital radio, full Bluetooth integration, head-up driver display and sports seats.
Those alloys are two-tone designed to show off the JCW's racing heritage, while added to exterior colour options are "chili red" and "rebel green".
Like its BMW stablemates, all Minis have condition-based servicing … so it depends on how far you drive and how hard on how regularly you should get maintenance. You can opt for the TLC package which includes scheduled servicing for five years or 70,000km for $980.
