3m great white cleared Ballina beach

CLARENCE swimmers and surfers are reminded to keep watch at the beach today after a 3m great white cleared a Ballina beach at the weekend.

A patrol helicopter cleared the water of more than 10 surfers after a 3m white shark was spotted "close enough to pat" off Boulder Beach at 10.30am on Saturday.

Rotorwing Helicopter Services posted photos of the incident saying the "excellent result" of getting surfers out of the water was an understatement.

"These photos do not do the situation justice as when we first spotted this shark it was in the line up with 10 plus surfers," the post says.

"Close enough to pat, everybody in the water responded to our signals and the beach was cleared immediately.

"The shark continued to swim south towards flat rock beach where helicopters continued to monitor its movements."

Another shark was also spotted offshore at Tallows Beach in Byron Bay, but was considered not to be a threat.

Both Rotorwing Helicopters Services and Air T&G Helicopters have been contracted to carry out daily patrols over Northern Rivers beaches during the school holidays.
