40 years of fashionable, friendly service in CQ region
FOR 40 years, Thelma Downs has provided fashionable and friendly service working for W.Lane, formerly known as Rockmans.
She said fashion had come and gone in waves over that time but one thing had stayed true to course — her love of fashion.
“I’ve always enjoyed what I do,” Mrs Downs said.
“I’ve just generated so many friendships along the way with those that I worked with.
“It's been a pleasure.”
Mrs Downs said she took pride in always putting her customers first with warm and friendly service that enticed them to return.
She first started with the company at the Kincora Rockmans store in 1980, before working at Blackwater from 1987, in Mackay’s Rockmans store formerly along Victoria St from 2000 to 2004 and at Mount Pleasant Shopping Centre’s Rockmans until 2010.
Mrs Downs said she swapped over to Wombat which then became W.Lane where she has been ever since between the CBD and Mount Pleasant.
She thanked her colleagues, particularly Donna Steel at Noni B, for having organised the surprise dinner at Church on Palmer on Saturday night attended by her husband and colleagues turned friends, including those who travelled from Brisbane.
Husband Barry Downs said he was proud of his hardworking wife for amassing 40 years with the company.
“There’s not many people who achieve that,” Mr Downs said.
He said his wife had always loved fashion having formerly owned her own boutique in Gordonvale.
“I think I counted 79 pairs of shoes in the wardrobe,” he said with a laugh.
“She just loves fashion, always has, and probably always bloody will.”
