Man fined $500 for threat to kill

A MAN who threatened to shoot and kill staff at the Brendan Hansen Building was not fazed by the $500 fine he received for the threats.

Mark James Eustance responded with "you beauty" after Magistrate Graeme Tatnell handed down the fine.

Eustance pleaded guilty in Hervey Bay Magistrates Court to causing a public nuisance on January 22.

Police prosecutor Senior Constable Donna Sperling said Eustance went to the top floor of the building, which is home to a number of government departments, and lay down in an empty office just before 5pm.

She said Eustance argued with an employee who told him he could not sleep there and needed to leave.

"The defendant has told the employee that he would shoot them all," she said.

Snr Const Sperling said employees managed to get Eustance to leave.

He then proceeded to tell workers leaving the building he would shoot and kill them.

Eustance, who represented himself, said he "supposed" the facts read by Snr Const Sperling were correct.

When questioned by Magistrate Tatnell about why he made the threats he didn't have an answer.

"I don't know mate," he said.

"I might have been off my head."

Mr Tatnell said Eustance was "pretty lucky" police had not charged him with threatening violence.

Eustance was warned he could not say things like that people as it made them "feel unsafe".

He fined Eustance $500 and a conviction was recorded.

"You would have been better off having that money trying to get some help."
