New $550,000 campaign to attract whale watchers

SOME 7000 visitors are about to hit the region, and Fraser Coast Opportunities is spending more than half a million dollars to promote their arrival.

"More than 7000 whales visit our protected waters each season and stay for up to 10 days at a time," Fraser Coast Opportunities general manager David Spear said.

"This happens nowhere else along the migration, where the whales are moving through the open ocean."

The new $550,000 campaign aims to position the region as a unique place to experience the humpback whales along the south-east seaboard, with the tagline "Guaranteed in Hervey Bay".

The multi-media campaign will promote Hervey Bay as the only place where whale watchers can be guaranteed exceptional, close encounters on calm waters.

Tourism and Events Queensland, FCO, Hervey Bay whale watch operators and local tourism operators launched the campaign, which directly targets people in Brisbane and south east Queensland.

"Put simply, there are more whales to see here, more close encounters to be had and more lasting memories to create," Mr Spear said.

The campaign will encourage people to go to a website - www.whalesherveybay.com.au, where the whale experience of Hervey Bay will be brought to life with video and images from whale watching trips.
