Angus Campbell to head Operation Sovereign Borders

AN ARMY man with experience in the Department of Prime Minister and Cabinet will head the Coalition's asylum-seeker strategy, Operation Sovereign Borders.

The former Major-General Angus Campbell was promoted to the three-star Lieutenant General rank in Canberra on Thursday.

His promotion preceded his immediate move from his post as Deputy Chief of Army to head the new cross-agency taskforce.

Lt-Gen Campbell has also served in East Timor, as the nations Deputy National Security Advisor and as the head of all Australian operations in the Middle East.

His new role will see him oversee customs and border protection, immigration and defence communications with a view to achieving the Coalition's "stop the boats" policy.

The creation of the new Joint Agency Taskforce for Operation Sovereign Borders marks an official turn in policy to a more offensive position on refugees in the region.
