Aussie tourist dies on the way to snorkeling in Fiji

FIJIAN authorities are investigating the death of a 36-year-old Australian man who died after leaving a prominent hotel to go snorkelling on Saturday night.

The man, whose identity is yet to be confirmed by authorities, left the Outrigger on the Lagoon on Saturday to go snorkelling, but was not seen later that night.

Resort general manager Peter Hopgood told ABC the man had checked in for a single night with a female friend.

Police and other local authorities launched a search for the man at 8pm on Saturday night, which stopped overnight and was resumed on Sunday morning.

Locals at a nearby village found the man's body on Sunday morning, with authorities taking the corpse for an autopsy.

A spokesman for the Department of Foreign Affairs confirmed the department was providing consular assistance to the man's family.

It was the second death of an Australian holidaying in Fiji in a fortnight, after a Sydney man was killed in a boat collision 10 days ago.
