Chief Justice Tim Carmody pulls out of legal conference

CHIEF Justice Tim Carmody has pulled out of a legal conference after his wife was admitted to hospital.

Justice Carmody, who is on sick leave, was set to outline his vision for the court system at the Hamilton Island gathering on Friday.

Earlier this week he announced he would step down from his position if the Queensland Government agreed to judiciary and court reforms.

But the government has publicly remained resistant to Justice Carmody's calls.

He said the community deserved a resolution to problems between himself and his colleagues, but added his resignation would not bring an end to the court system's cultural and structural issues.

Court of Appeal President Margaret McMurdo recently refused to sit on cases with him and another judge once recorded a conversation with him.

Justice Carmody's fellow supreme court judges were so incensed at the former chief magistrate's appointment 10 months ago they boycotted his swearing in ceremony.

On Thursday Justice Carmody again met with Attorney-General Yvette D'Ath after flagging his potential resignation in an April meeting with her.

Ms D'Ath was tight-lipped about both meetings.

She would only say Thursday's discussion was constructive and a range of issues was touched on.

The Queensland Bar Association has joined the Queensland Law Society in condemning calls for a royal commission into the supreme court.

But both groups have maintained support for a judicial commission.
