Construction heavyweight faces disqualification over pub

THE director of a multi-award winning Brisbane construction firm could face disqualification by Queensland's building industry regulator over his involvement in the collapsed Surfair Tavern at Marcoola.

Austin Ward was behind Surfair Holdings Pty Ltd, which included the tavern and bar at Marcoola, until it was placed in the hands of voluntary administrators on November 6 last year.

This was at the request of a secured creditor who was reportedly owed millions of dollars.

Mr Ward is also the director of Austruct Pty Ltd, a Brisbane-based firm behind projects like Stamford Plaza, the Tingalpa Hotel and the Story Bridge Hotel.

But Mr Ward had also been linked to a failed construction company with a

very similar name, Austruct Queensland, which was placed in the hands of external administrators.

Mr Ward told the Daily in November he had not been a director with Austruct Queensland "for years" and Austruct Contracting Pty Ltd was a "new company and a non-trading entity".

He said Austruct Pty Ltd was "still trading and is unrelated to Surfair's situation". However, this is no longer the case.

Queensland Building and Construction Commission commissioner Steve Griffin said this week action had begun to "exclude Mr Ward in relation to the appointment of receiver/managers to Surfair Holding Pty Ltd".

The Surfair Tavern, bar and gaming area has been listed for sale on behalf of the administrator by expressions of interest
