James Hird loses bid for insurer to cover legal costs

FORMER Essendon AFL coach James Hird has lost a bid to have the club's insurer pay his legal bills.

Hird sued Chubb Insurance after it refused to pay his $660,000 legal costs for his failed challenge against the Australian Sports Anti-Doping Authority.

Chubb claimed it was liable only for Essendon's defence proceedings and not for proceedings he brought against others.

Victorian Supreme Court Justice Kim Hargrave ruled Hird failed to establish any claim on the policy.

Chubb indicated it would seek legal costs at a later date.
