Jury finds man guilty of raping woman he met on dating site

A JURY took less than two hours to find a man guilty of raping the Mackay woman he struck up a relationship with after meeting her online.

The woman's mother and supporters let out an audible sigh of relief as the nine-woman-and-three-man jury read out the first and second guilty verdicts on Friday in the Brisbane District Court.

However, the jury found the man not guilty on the third rape charge he was facing.

Despite the guilty verdict, state law prevents the man from being identified as it could lead to the identification of the woman he bashed, tortured, raped and assaulted during a three-day ordeal when he held her captive in September 2011.

Outside the court room one of the woman's supporters confronted the man's mother calling her "scum" and said she "should hang her head in shame for giving birth to such an animal."

On day one of the trial the man pleaded guilty to seven charges relating to the woman's three-day ordeal including torture, depravation of liberty, grievous bodily harm and assault.

When asked by Judge Nicholas Samios whether he had anything to say in relation to being found guilty the man said, "no, my barrister will speak on my behalf".

The man's barrister Michael Byrne then asked the court for a sentence adjournment so a pre-sentence report could be compiled.

Judge Samios granted the request, but ordered the report include a psychiatric or psychology report and it must be complied within the next 28 days.

The man was remanded into custody for a sentencing date to be fixed early next year.
