Maya Angelou honoured by Clinton and Obama at memorial

ICONIC poet, author and civil rights activist Maya Angelou has been honoured at a private memorial led by former US President Bill Clinton and First Lady Michelle Obama.

Remembering "the greatest voice on the planet", Mr Clinton said God had loaned Angelou his voice and decided he "wanted it back for a while".

Oprah Winfrey described Angelou, whose poem "I know why the caged bird sings" was synonymous with the civil rights movement, as her "mentor, mother sister and friend"

Angelou passed away in her North Carolina home last month aged 86.
