QUEENSLAND Labor has urged Premier Campbell Newman to "change the way you do things" in the wake of the LNP's defeat at the Redcliffe by-election on Saturday.

Opposition Leader Annastacia Palaszczuk said the by-election, which saw a 16% swing to Labor's Yvette D'Ath, was one of the largest swings against a sitting government in Queensland's recent history.

Labor's victory came after former LNP Redcliffe MP Scott Driscoll resigned after being found in contempt of the parliament last year.

Ms D'Ath, a former Federal Labor MP, earned a renewed political life after her defeat at the September federal election last year, defeating the LNP's Kerri-Anne Dooley on Saturday.

Ms Palaszczuk said the defeat was a message to Mr Newman that he and his government "need to start listening" to the people of Queensland.

But while much of Labor's victory was put down to Mr Driscoll's behaviour, Premier Newman said he also shouldered personal responsibility for the defeat.

He said on Saturday night he took responsibility for "other factors as leader of the LNP and Premier", and that some may have felt the Newman Government had "moved too quickly" on some issues.
