Packaging industry to take role in targeting litterbugs

KEEP Australia Beautiful and the National Packaging Industry have joined forces to launch a campaign targeting litterbugs.

Australians toss out so much rubbish annually it can fill 3000 Olympic-sized swimming pools.

The National Packaging Industry has invested $50 million in the campaign which aims to reduce Australia's litter by 20% within the next decade.

National Packaging Industry CEO Stan Moore said the program works on public reporting of dumped rubbish and litterers via its website or hotline allowing government agencies to investigate further.

"It is pretty ambitious, but Australians have been pretty good on this," he said.

"Year on year the count has been coming down but we think we can do better."
