Patty Mills eyes crack at another NBA crown
BOOMERS guard Patty Mills believes San Antonio is the best place for him to repeat history and pick up another NBA championship ring.
That was why he ultimately decided to stay in Texas on a three-year, $A13 million deal, instead of going elsewhere in search of more game time and money.
Mills wrote himself into the record books last month by becoming the first indigenous Australian, and just the third Aussie, to hold up basketball's biggest prize - the Larry O'Brien trophy.
Mills played a key role in the Spurs' 4-1 victory over LeBron James and the Miami Heat in the finals series, nailing 17 points, including five three-pointers, in the decisive game five.
He and fellow Australian and Spurs title winner Aron Baynes were in Brisbane on Saturday with their famed piece of silverware, which they've nicknamed "Lazza".
While soaking up the good vibes from a crowd of about 1500 at King George Square, Mills, 25, turned his attention to creating more history in his next three years at the Spurs.
"A goal for me throughout my career has definitely been to be a starting point guard, and I'm in the best place to learn that right now," he said.
"Kawhi Leonard, Danny Green and myself, and hopefully Baynesy (currently a free agent) comes back, we're all young guys that have got a lot of experience in making it to the NBA finals two years in a row.
"Having the same team come back next year, hopefully we can have another crack at it again."
Mills said it was impossible to leave San Antonio, given how much the club suited his team-first attitude.
"Given the situation with my shoulder (off-season surgery), it just shows what San Antonio is like, looking after me and all the other guys," he said.
Baynes, a Cairns product, said he was leaving his NBA future up to his agents, but was looking forward to playing for Australia in the World Cup in Spain in August and September, alongside fellow Queenslander Cameron Bairstow.
Bairstow was recently picked up by the Chicago Bulls as a second-round draft selection.
