Skype being used to help children develop communication

FLETCHER Tudor is a bright, fun-loving two-year-old boy whose world of communication and learning is opening up through use of online video Skype that he uses to link-in with his speech therapist.

From their Pleystowe property, he and mum Sally are among a group of Mackay families who take part in the valuable resource of Hear and Say Telepractice that runs the successful program of early intervention for deaf children in urban, rural and remote areas across Queensland where they learn to hear, listen and speak.

Fletcher is one of more than 600 deaf children and their families using the system that was started 22 years ago by associate professor Dimity Dornan AO.

The families receive regular online lessons for listening and spoken language from their home.

Mrs Tudor rates the program highly and the benefit to Fletcher. She is also instructed how to help her son gain speech skills.

"He is profoundly deaf in his right ear. The problem was diagnosed early," she said.

For the Tudor family it meant many trips south to Rockhampton and a Brisbane clinic and Fletcher had a hearing aid fitted at 14 weeks of age. In January he had a cochlear implant.

Family life has become easier by simply using Skype for Fletcher's audio and verbal development. For more information on Hear and Say go to www.hearandsay.com.au.
