Sustainability report highlights gaps in species data
FISHERIES Minister John McVeigh said the large number of species listed as uncertain or undefined in the latest sustainability report was because of a lack of information to reliably determine their exploitation status.
He said the annual assessment highlighted where those gaps existed and where more research was necessary.
However the State Government could not give any information about its budget allocations for the past four years or the next year because there was none.
"There is no specific budget for assessment of key fish stock status,'' the minister said.
"Different proportions of a large number of groups and systems within the Department of Agriculture, Fisheries and Forestry, each with their own budget, contribute to the assessment of stock status."
The 2012 Stock Status Report was based on a combination of peer-reviewed studies in addition to the latest information available.
The Australian Government used a similar process in compiling the 2012 Status of Key Australian Fish Stocks report.
