Three soldiers wounded after being shot in Afghanistan

THREE Australian Special Forces soldiers were wounded after coming under heavy fire in an operation in Afghanistan last week.

A statement from Defence released on Friday confirmed the three soldiers suffered minor fragmentation wounds during the operation in Oruzgan province.

The Afghan National Security Forces-led operation was launched to provide support to three security checkpoints that came under "heavy, prolonged insurgent attack" last week.

Defence said the latest casualties brought to 14 the total number of Australian soldiers wounded in the conflict.

The department also confirmed "a number" of insurgents were killed during the operation, including a mid-level commander who was supplying weapons to local insurgents.

All soldiers were expected to return to full duties in the near future.

No further information was available from Defence.
