WOMEN'S sevens rugby is on the move in Australia and Toowoomba has been identified as a prospective nursery for the sport's growing popularity.

Former Fairholme student and Australian touch football representative Emilee Cherry is already a key member of the national sevens rugby squad and this week Australian coach Chris Lane visited the city to cast an eye over some further emerging talent.

Lane and Cherry attended Tuesday night's Toowoomba Bears women's squad training at Heritage Oval.

With a women's sevens tournament circuit set to kick off in Australia later this year Lane said the sport is on the verge of an exciting expansion.

"Emilee is already a part of our future plans and I was keen to have a look at some of the other emerging players from the Toowoomba region," Lane said.

"Touch football is a real hotbed of talent for sevens rugby and we had already identified the Etheridge twins Gemma and Nikki as players of interest.

"Having a look at them was the primary reason for my trip to Toowoomba this time but there were three or four other girls who I was interested in seeing.

"There was definitely some football ability amongst them and the next thing is to bring the girls up to the physical side of the game.

"Emilee is a great role model for girls interested in taking up the sport. She's a very dedicated athlete who works hard and she's definitely done a good job of picking up rugby."
