USA concerned over who Russia is targeting in Syria

THE US has cast doubt over who Russia is targeting in its air strikes in Syria.

While Russia asserted it had hit eight IS targets in its first air raids, the US said it believed Russia had targeted the opposition rebels fighting embattled Syrian leader Bashar al-Assad.

US Defence Secretary Ash Carter said: "It does appear they were in areas where there were probably not ISIL (IS) forces."

Conflicting reports put the civilian death toll at about 30.

A US official said Moscow gave Washington only an hour's notice before the strikes, via a Russian official who walked into the US embassy in Baghdad and asked the US Air Force to avoid Syrian air space during the mission.
