Man hospitalised after brawl at pub

A 20-YEAR-OLD man is in a stable condition in the Royal Brisbane Hospital following a brawl at Middlemount in the early hours of Saturday.

A hospital spokesman said the man, who sustained head and spinal injuries, had been moved out of the intensive care unit into a ward.

Detectives were trying to unravel the events that led to the man’s horrific injuries, possibly sustained from being king-hit or crash-tackled outside the Middlemount Hotel.

It was believed at least two fights erupted outside the hotel just after midnight and the pub was closed at the time.

Mackay Inspector Rohan Burke said three detectives from Mackay went to Middlemount to assist Moranbah police. He said it was expected they would gather about 30 statements from witnesses as part of the investigation.

“It’s going to be a drawn-out process,” Insp Burke said.

He said there were no arrests made as yet and he could not determine how long it would take because it would depend on the information arising from the investigation.
