A case of David 2, Goliaths 0

IN a battle reminiscent of David versus Goliath, an Elanora man has stopped a company from setting up microwave aerials next to his family home.

Steve Klein fought the water retailer Allconnex to stop it from setting up a microwave aerial next door to his home in Westminster Blvd.

Mr Klein was no stranger to confrontation with big companies, having successfully stopped Telstra from building a tower on the same site about three years ago.

"In about 2000 Optus put in an aerial and nobody knew about it," Mr Klein said. "Just one day it was there and we had to investigate to find out who owned it."

Since Optus installed its transmitter Mr Klein has learnt more about the technology and kept an eye on the site. When Telstra wanted to install equipment the neighbourhood rallied.

"We started to get irritated," Mr Klein said.

"There were other people here who didn't want this happening."

Mr Klein and his neighbours' efforts attracted the attention of the media.

"That went on for a few months, but the battle with Allconnex was a lot longer," he said.

An Allconnex spokeswoman said the microwave tower would have enabled several operational improvements, including allowing Allconnex to control the entire water, wastewater and recycled water network.

The spokeswoman said existing communication equipment located at Westminster Reservoir would be used to communicate with microwave towers located at Panorama, Molendinar, Pimpama and Canowindra.
