A MAKESHIFT pool left behind on Shelly Beach after Australia Day celebrations has been removed by the council's beach cleaning contractor.

Councillor Trevor McDonald said it was the most unusual thing he's seen this Australia Day.

"Two years ago council workers took four truck-loads of rubbish from the site of a beach party which included couches (some burnt) and old fridges but this year it hasn't been too bad," he said.

Cr McDonald said the contractor removed the tarp and filled in the hole on Shelly Beach yesterday as part of their normal beach cleaning program.

"The beaches are cleaned as soon as possible after Australia Day," he said.

"The council and the contractor do not keep a tally on the amount of rubbish collected after Australia Day compared to other days, but more rubbish is usually collected on the days following big events along the foreshore."

Cr McDonald said this year no extra staff were rostered on for the clean-ups.

"People are generally more aware of doing the right thing and putting their rubbish in the bins provided and sorting recyclable materials," he said.

Cr McDonald reminded people to use the appropriate bins for their rubbish to keep the environment clean.
