Acland mine future a decision not made lightly: Lynham

THE State Government's decision on the future of the New Acland Coal Mine will not be made lightly, according to State Development Minister Anthony Lynham.

Mine owner New Hope will be hoping their impending Queensland Land Court case goes the same way as their mine in Maryborough.

The Land Court recommended the mine, located outside Maryborough, be approved but said New Hope would have to adhere to stricter noise level conditions.

Land Court member William Isdale ruled the mine would not have an impact on the nearby Mary River.

Dr Lynham said it would take up to eight weeks to come to his decision when the court hands down its findings in January for the New Acland Coal Mine.

"It will take me about six to eight weeks to go through the Land Court determination. I look at all these things carefully," he said.

"With the Adani Coal Mine, I looked through every page over a matter of weeks.

"I'll be taking care with all the documents until I can make sure that I agree with what the Land Court is saying.

"The Land Court process is a rigorous process that I thoroughly respect."

Dr Lynham said people should not read into the decision on the Colton Coal Mine when looking to the New Acland Expansion.

"It is a mine that the coal will be used to create steel. That's why the Colton Coal Mine has significantly less opposition to it," he said.

New Hope and its supporters responded angrily last week after the Government re-instated laws requiring mines to apply for water licences, with conditions requiring the company to have a Land Court decision in its favour.

Chief operating officer Andrew Boyd said the company was not opposed to the laws but wanted to avoid future court challenges to the mine.

He said without the expansion New Acland would begin to run out of coal and be forced to shed jobs.
