Alcopop's trainers prepare for long-awaited Caulfield win

VETERAN galloper Alcopop will have the chance on Saturday to do what he was unable to in 2009 ... win the Caulfield Cup.

The eight-year-old was yesterday included in the field for the $2.5 million handicap at the discretion of officials from the Melbourne Racing Club and Racing Victoria.

Alcopop would have been a raging favourite to win the race three years ago after a blistering win in the Herbert Power Stakes the previous week, but was not nominated due to an oversight by trainer Jake Stephens.

The gelding has visited the winner's circle just once since, but produced an impressive effort to finish three-quarters of a length behind Cox Plate contender Ocean Park when second in last Saturday's Caulfield Stakes.

The other galloper elevated to the field yesterday was the Ciaron Maher-trained seven-year-old Moudre.

The unlucky horse was Sabrage which was made the first emergency despite an impassioned plea by trainer Mike Moroney.

Saturday's field is one of the strongest assembled in the Cup's history, with 13 Group One winners among the 22 runners, including emergencies.

They include the past two Melbourne Cup winners in Americain and Dunaden, last year's Caulfield Cup winner Southern Speed, and the winners of the Sydney Cup (Niwot) and Brisbane Cup (Lights Of Heaven).

Dunaden has been the big shortener in betting in recent days, tumbling in from $15 last week to $6.50 with Tattsbet yesterday.

The barrier draw will take place at Caulfield on Wednesday morning.
