ALL eyes looked to the skies above Maryborough over the weekend as the Wings, Warbirds and Wheels event flew into town.

Organisers said more than 5000 spectators attended and more than 70 pilots brought all manner of aircraft to the Heritage City for the two-day event.

Tony Pope from the Maryborough aero club said he was thrilled with the response to the event and “over the moon” with the crowd numbers.

“It has been sensational; we thought we might get three or four thousand people but we've been swamped,” Mr Pope said.

“We filled our donation tins and had to get new ones brought in, the support has been that good.”

Entry was by donation with all monies raised going to the Royal Flying Doctor Service and Angel Flight.

Mr Pope said the iconic RAAF Roulette display jets may be on the menu for next year's event.

“If we book early enough we should be in with a good chance to get them.

“We already have bigger and better plans for next year, the Roulettes would be icing on the cake.”

During the event the Fraser Coast Regional Council announced a plan to increase aviation tourism to the region.

Mayor Mick Kruger said under the plan, recreational flyers would not pay any landing fees to use Fraser Coast airports.

“The council and the aviation industry have worked well together in the past couple of months to develop this plan,” Cr Kruger said.

“We are working together to promote the aviation industry and the Fraser Coast.

“While council might not collect as much in landing fees to offset operations at the airport, we believe that increasing the number of visitors to the region will have an economic flow-on to all residents.

“Tourism is our major industry and we need to do whatever we can to promote it.”
