THE Oscars red carpet arrivals are in full swing in Los Angeles ahead of Hollywood's night of nights.

Old-school glamour and simple silhouettes dominated women's fashion, with nominees Rooney Mara and Saoirse Ronan standing out in detailed downs.

Aussie actress Naomi Watts, attending with her husband Liev Schreiber, was also praised for her dark blue strapless dress.

Fellow Aussie and Best Actress nominee Cate Blanchett turned heads with her show-stopping seafoam gown, as did Margo Robbie in a glittering gold dress with plunging neckline and structured shoulders.

Velvet suits were a big trend with the men including Best Actor nominee Eddie Redmayne and presenter Henry Cavill.
