An RACQ LifeFlight spokesperson said witnesses reported seeing a person struggling in the ocean, about 25m offshore, on Friday evening, before losing sight of the swimmer.

The helicopter was initially tasked to search for the person last night, but was unable to locate anyone.

The chopper was called back to the search area this morning.

After hours of searching, the RACQ LifeFlight Rescue crew was stood down and returned to base.

Queensland Police Service coordinated the search.
