Alleged child snatchers get bail after incident

A TORQUAY woman has been charged with child stealing after she allegedly helped another woman take a child from a home in the Cairn's suburb of Redlynch.

Senior Constable Russ Park released information relating to the incident on the Far North My Police website on Thursday, detailing the allegations.

Police allege the two women, aged 20 and 33, entered a Lillipilli St residence just after 3pm on August 29 and assaulted a 28-year-old woman who was at home at the dwelling.

A verbal altercation then ensued and one of the women took hold of an 11-year-old boy at the residence and took him into a vehicle outside.

The two women then left the scene with the boy, who police confirm was known to them.

Police would not confirm the relationship of the boy to the two women.

The boy's father was told of the incident and found the child with one of the two women at a nearby family restaurant.

The woman left the child, getting into a vehicle with the second woman and left the area.

A police spokesman said the women had been spoken to and formally charged at the Hervey Bay Police Station on Wednesday afternoon.

The two women were both charged with child stealing and burglary.

The 33-year-old woman, who police said was born in Maryborough but now resides in Daisy Hill, was also charged with one count of assault occasioning bodily harm.

The child was not harmed as a result of the incident.

Both women were released on bail from the Hervey Bay Watchhouse on Wednesday.

They are scheduled to appear in the Cairns Magistrates Court on September 21.
