Alpha butcher snags Sausage King accolade
BUTCHERY owner Dean Maloney has snagged a major award for his unique sausages - on his first attempt.
The Alpha shop-owner has taken out a silver medal at the prestigious Queensland Sausage King and Best Butchers Burger Competition Capricorn Regional Final held recently in Mackay. The awards are run by the Australian Meat Industry Council.
Dean's honey roast beef with Dijon mustard sausages were just pipped at the post for gold - and a minor "presentation malfunction” cost him a second award.
"It's not too bad for a first attempt,” Dean said of his roast beef snags, which are a good seller at the Alpha shop.
"I sent my stuff through, as I wasn't able to make the awards (in person),” he said.
"The event was on the Sunday; I was told on the Monday night when they sent the scores through.”
Dean bought the Alpha butcher shop eight months ago, and while he completed his apprenticeship 12 years back, he has since been more occupied in his second profession of soil tester.
Now, a local woman runs the shop most days "but I come in to do the sausages”, he said.
The unusual sausage gourmet mix was his own creation, which he entered in the gourmet open class.
"I played around with different recipes.” Dean said.
"But this was one I thought was pretty good, so I sent it through (to the judges).”
Being a first-timer, Dean wasn't too familiar with all the rules and regulations of big-time award-winning - but it's all good learning for 2017.
"I nearly took out a second award on traditional beef sausages, too,” he said.
"If I had displayed them better - I didn't know that at the time.
"So the presentation needs to be better - but I think we'll go one better next time.”
