Highlands blacked out by fault

AN investigation will be launched into the “unexpected fault” which cast the Central Highlands and outer regions into darkness twice in as many days.

Power was lost in areas around Blackwater out to Longreach, including Emerald, where Westpac bank branch’s hot air balloon swiftly deflated.

Powerlink Queensland said power was restored within 20 minutes yesterday after a fault at the Lilyvale Substation caused an outage about 11.10am.

“The interruption was caused when an unexpected fault occurred during scheduled maintenance of a transformer at our Lilyvale Substation, which affected the two transformers at the substation,” Powerlink chief operating officer Simon Bartlett said.

“Ergon Energy crews were able to restore power to the affected areas within about 20 minutes of the interruption.

“The cause of the brief outage today and... (Wednesday) night will be investigated.”
