APEC meeting crucial to trade and investment

FOREIGN Minister Julie Bishop will hold a series of high-level talks with international leaders attending the APEC Meeting which starts on Friday.

The two-day meeting, being held this year in Beijing, China, plays a crucial role in delivering trade and investment liberalisation, advancing regulatory co-operation and improving the environment for business across the Asia Pacific region.

Ms Bishop said APEC's 21 member countries accounted for 58% of the world's GDP and 71% of Australia's trade in goods and services.

"I will meet Chinese counterparts to press for progress on Australian Government priorities in advance of President Xi Jinping's visit to Australia in mid-November, and to discuss a range of bilateral, regional and international matters," she said.

Ms Bishop will also meet with foreign ministers from other APEC countries, including the newly appointed Indonesian Foreign Minister, during her five-day visit.
