CSIRO to lose $110 million from Hockey's budget slashing
THE nation's chief scientific body, the CSIRO, will not avoid the Abbott government's first budget cuts, with more than $110 million removed in Tuesday's budget.
While budget papers were light on detail on which CSIRO programs would be cut, the total is expected to include as many as 500 job cuts at the government agency.
The funding cuts will be made over four years, limiting the initial impact, with other science groups also to face the pinch.
Among them, the Australian Institute of Marine Science's budget has been cut by $7.8 million and the Defence Science and Technology Organisation lost $120 million over the period.
