Approval delayed for Galilee Basin's Carmichael mega-mine
FEDERAL Environment Minister Greg Hunt now has until August 1 to decide whether the Carmichael Coal Mine and Rail Infrastructure Project will go ahead.
Mr Hunt will is currently considering Adani's proposal to develop and open-cut underground coal mine and 189km of rail and associated infrastructure about 160km north west of Clermont.
A spokesman for the Minister said the date had been extended to allow him to thoroughly consider the large volume of material associated with the project.
Greenpeace Head of Programme Ben Pearson said the delay was welcome news and called on Mr Hunt to reject the proposal entirely.
"This mine would result in the development of a vast new coal terminal at Abbot Point in the World Heritage Area which would have required dredging and dumping, and thousands of extra coal ships carving through the Reef every year," he said.
"Approving it now would have been tantamount to an act of provocation, with UNESCO currently mulling the status of Australia's greatest natural icon."
