Juan Martin del Potro on track with big win in Sydney

JUAN Martin del Potro (pictured) continued his emotional comeback from injury by dumping top seed Fabio Fognini out of the Sydney International 4-6 6-2 6-2 to keep his title defence on track.

Earlier, Italy's Simone Bolelli sent No.2 seed, Belgium's David Goffin, packing with a 6-3 6-3 upset win.

Goffin, who had moved from 100 in the world rankings at the start of 2014 to be pushing for a top 20 spot, was strongly fancied to win the tournament, but Bolelli had him well covered from the opening few games.

But the story of the tournament has been Del Potro who spent 10 months out of the game last year with a wrist injury. After a tearful first-round victory over Ukrainian Sergiy Stakhovsky, the Argentinean was forced to fight back from a set down after Fognini took the opening set 6-4. Del Potro will now take on Kazakhstani qualifier Mikhail Kukushkin in the quarter-finals.
