ARM writer's volunteer work recognised

AUSTRALIAN Regional Media rugby league columnist Tony Durkin has been named Queensland Volunteer of the Year by the Men of League Foundation.

The award was presented at the foundation's annual Queensland luncheon in Brisbane last week, which was attended by 900 people.

In announcing the 2016 winner, Queensland Men of League state manager Frank Barrett said Durkin (pictured) had been a major driving force behind the Sunshine Coast Men of League committee's remarkable success, taking on many roles such as organiser, wordsmith, MC, fundraiser and interviewer.

"This award recognises his immeasurable contribution to Men of League in Queensland,” he said.

"He has a long and highly regarded history in rugby league as a former Broncos media manager, Rugby League Week journalist and editor, member of the Immortals judging panel and a television and radio commentator. As well, he has a huge base of followers through his regular ARM columns.”
