EARLIER: THE police hunt for fugitives Gino and Mark Stocco in north-east Victoria took on added urgency on Thursday afternoon after a police car was rammed by a white Landcruiser thought to contain the pair.

The police officers were not injured in the collision near St James, a small town about 50km from Wangaratta.

Thirteen hours earlier, about 1am and 200km to the north, the pair sped past a police checkpoint on the Melba Highway at Castella.

Acting under instructions, police did not pursue the car as the men were believed to be armed with a high-powered firearm and a shotgun.

The father and son, aged 57 and 35, are wanted over a shootout with police in Wagga Wagga, New South Wales, last Friday and offences committed over eight years in three states.

They were spotted near the town of Yea, about 100km north-east of Melbourne, on Wednesday morning.

Having flooded into the region and set up a command post at Yea, police are confident they have the pair cornered.
