Armed robbers scare wedding guests

IT was an alarming end to their wedding night – an armed robbery at the reception venue.

But Rockhampton newlyweds Simon and Aleesha Malone said they were happy their guests were safe and well.

On Saturday night two men burst into the North Rockhampton Bowls Club on Glenmore Rd at 10.15pm armed with a knife and tomahawk, threatened bar staff, and stole thousands of dollars from the till.

The robbery was another blow for the club which has not long come through the floods.

Mr Malone said when one of their guests ran into the function room screaming and yelling there was an armed robbery, he thought it was a joke.

But Mr Malone said he could see from her face that it was no joke and he acted quickly to get all the guests into the room and lock the doors.

One guest pushed a table up against the glass doors while another kept an eye out on the passage way leading to the bar.

“I was shocked,'' Mr Malone said.

“I was more worried about our guests than ourselves.”

Mrs Malone said the whole affair did not last longer than five minutes and when it was over the bar staff came in to say the robbers had left.

She said the guests who saw the robbery in progress were “shaken up and crying”.

Mr Malone said the robbery put a dampener on the evening.

“We thought everything would be finished by midnight but (it wound down) at 10.15pm,'' he said.

“We're happy that no one was hurt.''

Mr Malone said he contacted The Morning Bulletin to set the record straight that he and the other wedding party goers were well aware of the robbery.

Anyone with information on the robbery can call Crime Stoppers anonymously on 1800333000.
