Judge lashes Yamanto thug for punching a 71-year-old man

WHEN a 71-year-old man decided to drive a family friend to see her daughter the last thing he expected was to be left bleeding on the side of the road.

A court has heard the elderly man was punched in the head by 37-year-old William Charles Wyllie.

Wyllie yesterday pleaded guilty in the Ipswich Magistrates Court to serious assault.

Wyllie was living in Yamanto with his brother who was the father of a two-year-old girl.

The mother of the girl regularly visited the house; however, the court heard there had been several disputes regarding the child.

On June 29 last year, the mother was driven to Yamanto by the 71-year-old man.

Soon after arriving, she returned to the car with the girl and told the man to drive away.

Wyllie and his brother emerged to stop them leaving with the girl.

While his brother was talking to the girl's mother the court heard Wyllie approached the man and punched him in the side of the head.

The man fell to the ground from the blow and suffered injuries to his nose, cheek and left eye.

When police arrived at the scene they found the man sitting on the side of the road disoriented and covered in blood near shops in Yamanto.

The court heard Wyllie eventually handed himself into police on the charge and made full admissions.

"Assaulting a 71-year-old … is a very serious matter," Magistrate Aaron Simpson said.

"The community expects that people aged over 60 are protected from acts like this."

He sentenced Wyllie to one month prison, wholly suspended for six months.
