Taiwan air disaster leaves 47 dead

AT LEAST 47 people have died in an horrific plane crash in Taiwan as the pilot attempted to complete an emergency landing.

The 70-seater TransAsia Airways plane, carrying 54 passengers and four crew, crashed near a runway at the Magong airport on Taiwan's Penghu island.

Local authorities reported a thunderstorm may have caused the crash, with flames from the crash site extending to nearby apartment buildings, before being extinguished.
