Alleged Lismore stabber refused bail, back in court in Feb

A LISMORE stabbing victim was fighting for his life yesterday afternoon as his alleged attacker waited to front Lismore Local Court on an attempted murder charge.

Richmond police say about 6.30pm on Sunday two men, a 56-year-old from Lismore and a 27-year-old from the Kempsey region, left a unit in Uralba St, Lismore, after chatting with mutual friends over coffee.

Local Area Command Acting Detective Inspector Bernadette Ingram alleged the 27-year-old launched an unprovoked attack on the older man, who he had just met, striking him repeatedly and stabbing him in the lower back with a knife.

"We're still following that line of inquiry as to whether or not there was a particular motive," she said.

"The victim is in a critical condition, so yes, the assault was quite brutal."

Det Insp Ingram said the alleged attacker dragged the severely injured victim from the point of attack in the unit's stairwell to where he was found by witnesses between bins at the unit's car park.

Witnesses detained the alleged attacker and called emergency services.

The injured man was airlifted to Princess Alexandra Hospital in Brisbane with a fractured skull, fractured right arm and left shoulder and a stab wound to his back.

He was in critical condition in Gold Coast Hospital yesterday afternoon and the 27-year-old has been charged with attempted murder and causing grievous bodily harm with intent.

Refused bail, the 27-year-old appeared before Lismore Local Court yesterday afternoon, where his case was relisted for mention on February 17.

Det Insp Ingram said Richmond police were investigating whether drugs and alcohol were a factor in the incident.

She said the police investigation would now focus on tracking down potential witnesses.

"Witnesses are absolutely crucial in this matter," she said.

"We're appealing for anyone in the area who may have seen or heard anything.

"This (time of year) is supposed to be a really festive occasion.

"This is another sad incident around this time that brings it down."

Anyone with information about the incident should contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
